Overview


​Research activities in the Collider Physics group at the University of Alabama are focused on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

The LHC is colliding protons at the highest energies ever achieved in the laboratory. These high-energy collisions have already uncovered the long-elusive Higgs boson, and it is hoped that they may perhaps reveal even more exotic new physics, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions of space.

The UA group on CMS works on a variety of searches for beyond-Standard Model physics, particularly those involving photon signatures or leptons+jets. We also contribute to the operations, maintenance and upgrade of the Hadronic calorimeter. We are also playing leading roles in the application of advanced Machine Learning techniques to data analysis at the LHC.
